How do I go about cleaning the sliver plates on a hair flat iron?

I recently just had this happen. what i did worked for me but they did not llook like how when i first brought them. but i cleaned them till where the would not be burning dead hair or any other dirt. but what you do is take a wet rag and just scrub while the flat iron are OFF never do it while the are on and all them little stains wil just come off
